86 percent of cell phone
subscribers claim to rarely or never engage in discourteous cell phone use.
Yet half of those surveyed believe that Americans are generally discourteous when using cell phones in public. In addition, a significant number of wireless subscribers admit they don't know how to use common cell phone features that they believe promote more polite usage.
This was revealed in a survey commissioned by AT&T Wireless which examined the attitudes of adult wireless phone owners in the U.S. towards cell phone use in public.
The survey encouraged the company into launching a campaign to raise awareness of the simple ways consumers can become more considerate cell phone users. Here is a Top Ten list of tips for courteous
wireless phone use published by the company:
Enjoy the thrill of your vibrating cell phone.
USE THE VIBRATING RINGER FEATURE so incoming calls don't disturb others.
Your mom was right - sometimes it's better to be seen and not heard.
Show off your TEXT MESSAGING skills when using your phone in quiet public places and on public transportation.
If you love your cell phone, don't yell at it.
TALK QUIETLY! You don't have to shout to be heard when talking wirelessly.
Your cell phone ringer is no singer. Turn it off before the music starts.
TURN OFF YOUR PHONE during movies, theater/musical and other public performances.
Love sometimes means letting it go…to voicemail, that is.
Let VOICEMAIL take the call when a phone conversation just isn't appropriate in public.
If you leave it, it will ring.
Why is it that if you walk away from your phone, it always rings? KEEP YOUR PHONE CLOSE BY to cut down on the number of rings.
Save the juicy stuff for later.
KEEP CONVERSATIONS APPROPRIATE WHEN IN PUBLIC. Hold conversations about your private life in private.
Just the facts, ma'am.
Try to KEEP CONVERSATIONS SHORT when talking in quiet public places, or better yet: text message.
Know which buttons to push.
Take a few minutes to GET TO KNOW YOUR PHONE'S FEATURES by reading the user's manual - you may be surprised at all the things your phone can do!
Order your grande latte, then gab.
AVOID MULTI-TASKING on your cell phone if it means putting those around you on hold. Be considerate of service people and other customers while using your phone.
